Invoice for Wallpaper Order for Elihu Dwight

(WALLPAPER INVOICE. 1811)  ZECHARIAH MILLS & CO.  Invoice for Wallpaper Order for Elihu Dwight.

Hartford: August 20, 1811. Vertical partially printed billhead broadside with manuscript listings. (15 x 6 1/2 inches).

Rare manuscript example of early nineteenth century American wallpaper invoice.  Zechariah Mills is described as a "Hartford, Connecticut wallpaper manufacturer and dealer, who sold his own papers and those he imported from Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and Boston.  Mills is credited with being the first New England wallpaper manufacturer to routinely stamp and number his papers to protect his own designs."  Mill's numbering system is seen here as a lengthy order is placed with a variety of numbers showing the wallpaper blueprint for Elihu Dwight's house to be newly wallpapered.  It appears Mills could take this sheet and by tearing it horizontally could have two billheads.  In this case, Elihu Dwight placed an especially lengthy order.  Dwight was an American doctor, Dartmouth graduate, and early medical practitioner in South Hadley, Massachusetts.  Letterpress on laid paper, one side untrimmed.  Very good.
