RURAL ARCHITECTURE

SHAW, Edward.  RURAL ARCHITECTURE: CONSISTING OF CLASSICAL DWELLINGS, DORIC, IONIC, CORINTHIAN AND GOTHIC.

Boston: James B. Dow, 1843. 4to. Contemporary half polished calf. 108 pages, 52 engraved plates. First, and only, edition. [Hitchcock, 1161].

This is the rarest of Shaw's four books.  It is divided into three parts: a history of architecture; a discussion of Egyptian, Classical and Gothic styles; and plates of Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Gothic houses as well as Gothic churches.  There are examples of cottages and churches in the Classical and Gothic styles, many of which can still be seen in New England.  Plate forty-six shows Shaw's house built for David Sears in Brookline, Massachusetts.  With a ten page glossary of architectural terms.  Front hinge strengthened, else very good.
