Ancient and Modern Architectural Parallels

FREART, Roland.  A PARALLEL OF THE ANTIENT ARCHITECTURE WITH THE MODERN.

London: J. Walthoe, and others, 1733. Folio. Contemporary full-calf. (xxii), xxxviii, 115, (1), (6), 74 pages. Fourth edition.

Freart heavily influenced Thomas Jefferson, who used four plates from this book in his design of Monticello, confirmed by marginal notes in Jefferson's own copy.  According to Fiske Kimball, at least six of the pavilions at the University of Virginia--two directly and four indirectly--may be traced to this work.  Translated by John Evelyn, this edition also contains Evelyn's translation of Leon Battista Alberti's An Account of Architects and Architecture as well as an expanded edition of The Elements of Architecture by Sir Henry Wooten, England's first architectural book.  Skillfully and sympathetically rebacked.  Five leaves have the lower tips torn away, not affecting the images and the title page is browned.  Still a very nice copy.
