Early English Palladio

PALLADIO.  ANDREA PALLADIO'S FIVE ORDERS OF ARCHITECTURE....

London: S. Harding, 1729. 4to. Contemporary full-calf.  Engraved title page, (viii), 66 pages, 34 plates (I-XXXI, 5 unnumbered). Second issue. [Harris, 687; Fowler, 226].

Campbell's translation was first published in 1728, and this 1729 edition includes five additional plates. This edition of Palladio's Five Orders of Architecture was translated from the first Italian edition (Venice, 1570) and revised by Colen Campbell, the author of Vitruvius Brittanicus who died before this work on Palladio was completed.  It is a translation of Book I only.  Fourdrinier engraved the title page and the plates;  plates I and IV are printed in the text, as in the early Italian editions.  The added engraved title page was taken from the original woodcut title page of the 1570 edition, with substitutions in the cartouches containing the imprint and printers device, and a bust of Palladio at the top.  ``Five Curious Plates of Doors, Windows, and Chimney Pieces, invented by Mr. Campbell,'' is included, with illustrations  -- the additional five plates not found in the first edition.  Sympathetically rebacked; tips repaired, else a very good copy.
