COMSTOCK, William T. (editor). SUBURBAN AND COUNTRY HOMES.
New York: Comstock, 1893. Oblong folio (9 3/4 x 12 inches). Publisher's bright blue cloth stamped in black and gold. Unpaginated: (47 pages and 44 lithographic plates). First edition.
A bright and stunning copy of a rarity in American architectural books, not in Hitchcock, and represented in OCLC by six copies only, five of which are in the United States and one at the University of Toronto. The book contains designs for moderately priced houses by nineteen architects, along with two essays: "Suggestions on House Building" by A.W. Cobb and "How to Plumb a Suburban House" by Leonard D. Hosford. While the majority of architects are from the New York City area, a few work elsewhere. These include John Calvin Stevens of Portland, Maine; L.S. Buffington of Minneapolis, Minnesota; A.W. Cobb of Winthrop Highlands, Massachusetts; McCurdy and Pulis of Denver, Colorado; and Yarnall and Goforth of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The lithographic plates show both elevations and floor plans. A fine copy, a rare survival in fine condition with its original publisher's decorated binding so bright.
