Rare Viennese Art Deco Gift Book

(VIENNESE SUCCESSION)  BALL DER STADT, WIEN, 1909.

Vienna: Melzer, 1908. Oblong 8vo. (6 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches). White hand-bound saffian-binding, stamped in black, red and gold, in original highly decorated box with ribbon, often missing. Title leaf, dedication leaf, 12 colored lithographic plates. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy of an important art deco illustrated book in it's original box, often missing.  This work, featuring twelve full-page colored lithographs by Remigius Geyling (1878-1974), the notable Viennese painter and stage decorator, is one of the most famous and loveliest Viennese art nouveau books of the period.  It was designed as a gift for women attending a state dance.  The evocative illustrations show scenes from life in Vienna. The delicate book is in fine condition while the rare box, hand-crafted by the publisher, shows light wear but is still in very good condition.  A most uncommon package thus.
