London: William Pickering, 1833. 4to. Later quarter-leather, marbled paper boards. Lithographed title leaf, (ii), 18 pages, 59 plates with accompanying printed leaves. First edition.
This is the first of Shaw's books to be printed by Chiswick Press and published by William Pickering, a combination that produced some of the finest and most beautiful books of the Victorian period. The illustrations are a combination of engravings and lithographs, all hand-colored. The introduction and descriptions for each book source are by Sir frederic Madden of the British Museum. Some foxing to the early text pages, an ex-library stamp on the printed title leaf, else fine in a later binding.
