(BOOKBINDING) RHYMES AND ROUNDELAYES IN PRAISE OF A COUNTRY LIFE.
London: David Bogue, 1857. 4to. Decorated full-morocco trade binding. (viii), 192 pages. First edition.
An outstanding example of a fine 'Sixties illustrated book. McLean notes it contains some of the earliest drawings by Birket Foster among the forty-four illustrations in the text. The ornamental borders are by Noel Humphreys and Thomas Macquoid, and the book was edited by Joseph Cundall, one of his most pleasant books. The more common trade binding for the book occupies a full page illustration in McLean's Victorian Book Design. While the same as the deluxe, full-morocco binding on this copy, the details of the borders and leaf motif, heavily embossed into the leather, are much more detailed than those on the cloth example. Name in ink on front blank and the very lightest foxing to a few leaves only, else a fine copy.
