A Bridal Gift

(COLOR PRINTING)  A BRIDAL GIFT.

Liverpool: D. Marples, (1847). Small 8vo. Full morocco deluxe publisher's binding, decorative endpapers. x, 187, (1) pages. Seventh edition.

The seventh edition of the text was the first to include color decorations.  Robin De Beaumont and Ruari McLean (Cunall, page twenty-two) suggest that this is the first book to use wood-block color printing solely for ornaments as opposed to illustration. Each leaf is surrounded by color printed borders; the chapter headings by more elaborate designs.   Although unrecorded, it has been suggested that Owen Jones designed the endpapers and color printed borders for this book.  We know he designed the cloth covers for the trade issue of the book because his original drawings for it are in the collection of Michael Darley.  The light tan, almost citron, covers are discolored, as usual; there are splash marks on two leaves; still a very good copy of a scarce book.
