A COMPLETE BODY OF ARCHITECTURE

WARE, Isaac.  A COMPLETE BODY OF ARCHITECTURE.

London: T. Osborne and others, 1756. Folio. Contemporary  reverse calf.  Frontispiece, (ii), 748, (4), (15) pages, 114 plates, 14 of which are double-paged. First edition. [Harris, 906; Fowler, 436; O'Neal, 126a; Park, 84; Berlin Catalogue, 2283].

Isaac Ware's monumental book was one of the most influential English pattern books of the eighteenth century.  Ware expanded the Palladian concepts, introducing the ideas of Daviler, Tiercelet, Briseau, and Laugier to English architects.  It was heavily used in creating the new London town houses of Wrotham Park.  Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of this edition, sold as lot 721 in the 1829 auction.  A very good copy with crisp plates, irregularly numbered but collating complete.
