Complete with Appendix

MALTON, Thomas.  A COMPLEAT TREATISE ON PERSPECTIVE, bound with,  AN APPENDIX, OR SECOND PART.  Two volumes bound as one.

London: The Author, 1779 and 1783. Folio. Nineteenth century half-morocco. Frontispiece, (iv), 4, (8); (iv), 1-160, 101-296, (8) pages,  58 engraved plates, of which 55 are folding, 5 with moveable overslips. Second and first editions. [Archer, 199.3 & 200.3; Schimmelman, Books on Drawing, page 202].

Very uncommon with the Appendix.  First published in 1775, this title was considered the most exhaustive English work on perspective.  The subscribers list has many artists and tradesmen including Robert and James Adam, Chippendale, Belcher, Ince and Mayhew, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Benjamin West.  Pagination in the Appendix  erratic but complete.  Plates include all moveable slips and devices.  The Library Company of Philadelphia owned a copy by the end of the eighteenth century.  Covers lightly rubbed; name on title page; internally very good.
