GOLDMANN, Nikolaus. NICOLAI GOLDMANNS VOLLSTANDIGE ANWEISUNG ZU DER CIVIL-BAU-KUNST. Two volumes, bound as one.
Leipzig: Friedrich Landischens, 1708. Folio. Contemporary, blind-stamped vellum. Frontispiece, (xxii), 179, (1) pages, 74 plates; frontispiece, (x), 165, (1) pages, 19 plates. Second Leipzig edition.
An amalgamation of seventeenth-century architectural knowledge including treatises on fortifications and the proportions of columns, this work was published posthumously. Civil-Bau-Kunst stresses the importance of mathematics in architecture, the use of a module in building, and the theory of proportions. It is also important for its illustrated, multi-lingual glossary of architectural terms, as well as its series of plans and elevations of model buildings. Many of the plates are folding. Early leaves thumbed; waterstain on frontispiece and title page; minor, sporadic foxing; covers lightly sunned; tips worn; wormholes along top edges, not affecting text or illustrations. Scarce.
