(BOLTON, Edmund). NERO CAESAR, OR MONARCHIE DEBRAVED. AN HISTORICAL WORK.
London: Printed by T.S. for Thomas Walkley, 1624. Small folio. Contemporary calf. Engraved title leaf, (xvi), 288 pages. First edition.
Edmund Bolton (1575 - ?) was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and was a distinguished critic and historian. A Catholic, he proposed a Royal Academy for literature which failed shortly after James I's death. His patron, the Duke of Buckingham, was able to procure a small stipend for him, but he died in debtor's prison, nevertheless. The first edition of this book, printed by at least two printing houses, has many variants. This copy has an attractive engraved title by Francis Delaram as well as five engraved coins in the text, lacking in many copies. The errata is located at the end of the Table of Contents. Richard Wallwyn has written his name on the title pages, dating them "1651." We believe this to be the Richard Wallwyn who served in the House of Lords until 1691. An attractive copy in a contemporary full calf binding.
