GARDEN THEATER

(MCKIM, MEAD & WHITE)  GARDEN THEATER.  PROGRAM OF THE FIRST PERFORMANCE IN THE GARDEN THEATRE.

Scarborough-on-Hudson: Sleepy Hollow Country Club, 1917. Tall 8vo. Printed wrappers. (8) pages.

This elaborate program was produced to celebrate the first outdoor performance in the newly designed garden theatre by McKim, Mead & White who also designed the club-house at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, Scarborough-on-Hudson, New York.  "The site was chosen after careful study on account of the ground, the shade of the trees, and the natural beauty of the surroundings.  The theatre...designed principally of trees and shrubbery...will have the advantage of growing more beautiful year by year."  There are five tipped in photos of the principal performers, including George Barrere, founder and conductor of the Little Symphony and Serge Oukransky and Andreas Pavley principal dancers from the Chicago Opera Company.  The program included performances of Bach, Beethoven, Moussorgsky, Rameau, Offenbach, Sibelius, Greg, Chopin, etc.  The elaborate Nouveaux cover, gold and blue green printed on glazed purple paper is evocative of a sensuous Persian garden with two phoenix atop a flaming flower tree.
