(TRADE LABEL)  STAVELEY, John.  "A Late Eighteenth-Century Engraved Trade Label for Staveley, Carvers and Gilders, removed into Stonegate."

(York: circa 1790). (3 1/2 x 5 inches).

According to the card: "executes every branch of house carving in the most fashionable taste.  Also glass & picture frames... firescreens, &c.  Chimneypieces made & finished with wood or cast ornaments.  Likewise a new and curious imitation of variegated marble for chimney pieces which has a beautiful effect & takes the highest polish.  Composition cast ornaments manufactured on the most reasonable terms."  John Staveley appears to be the joyner noted as living in Grape Lane, adjacent to Stonegate, York.  John was an accomplished craftsman and in 1755 carved mouldings and scallop shells for the York Assembly Rooms, designed by Burlington.  The edges and surround of the label display classical architectural motifs representative of his work.  Scarce item; dusty, else very good.
