Tiflis: (circa 1890). Five photographs mounted on boards (4 are 6 3/4 x 5, and one is 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches).

Dmitri Ivanovich Ermakov (also spelled Yermakov or Jermakov) was one of the most important photographers of pre-revolutionary Tiflis in the Russian state of Georgia.  He lived from 1846 to 1916 and was known for his series of the Caucasian photographs.  He traveled extensively in different regions of Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Persia, Turkey, and North Caucasus taking pictures of cities, landscapes, architectural monuments and ethnic groups.  He took part in a number of exhibitions and received numerous major rewards for his photography.  In 1897 he was chosen as a corresponding member of the Caucasus Fine arts Supporting Society.  In 1907 he became a member of Caucasus Department at Moscow Archaeological Society, and in 1912 he became a founding member of the Tiflis Fine Arts Society.  The four smaller photographs show scenic landscape views of regions in the Caucasus, and the singular larger one Isarare architectural view of an unidentified large country house with ink inscription written below.
